Visit to local quilt shop: The Quilting Loft

Shelby's in the Pacific Northwest! Yesterday, I went to the Quilting Loft. It's a wonderful quilting and fabric store in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. They just opened a new store front, so I visited at the right time!

The store was nicely laid out and had a good selection. I bought some Echino fabrics and a print that spoke to me. I love buying prints I love and letting the fabric inspire the overall quilt.

Sewing Saturday!

Today was an awesome sewing day.

This morning, I finally pieced some batting and started to quilt one of my baby quilts in-progress. I used Elizabeth Hartman's Charm Squares Baby Quilt design, but changed the dimensions. The charm squares are from Tula Pink's "Plume Collection." The negative space is white linen.

This afternoon, I went to my Guild's Meet and Greet. We had a great time. Our guest speaker was Ron McConathy of Aronsha Photography. He showed us how to take better photographs of our quilts for causal and professional purposes. I need to try some of the tips he suggested.

We also had door prizes at the meeting, and I won a door prize! I didn't just win a door prize--I won the first door prize! I won some patterns, warm/earthy-toned fabric and "Sewing Green: 25 Projects Made with Repurposed & Organic Materials."

I really appreciate the book, because I'm a "green" person! I look forward to using the book. Maybe I'll use the fabrics to make something from the book?

Wonderful Sewing Saturday!

Color Wheel Project: Blue-Violet February

Exploring the color wheel continues. February's color is blue-violet.

I went to the quilt shop today to get some background fabric, so I decided to make my February fat quarter picks:

I picked two fat quarters from Moda's "Good Fortune" collection designed by Kate Spain. I like the simplicity of the patterns and the blue-violet comes through nicely.

March's color will be violet.

Saying goodbye to a friend

This weekend I mourned the loss of Sydney, my childhood pet and dear friend. My pets inspired my quilting, so I wanted to share this on my blog.

I had a difficult time, but used the time to reflect. I did some sewing this weekend and I'm thinking of new ways to honor Cocker Spaniels in my quilting.

I close this post with an excerpt of "The Power of the Dog" by Rudyard Kipling:

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy

Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

...

When the body that lived at your single will,

With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

Elizabeth Hartman's Sparkle Punch Quilt-Along

Last month, Elizabeth Hartman (my favorite quilter) featured a Sparkle Punch Quilt-Along on her blog: Oh, Fransson!.

I started the Quilt-Along on time, but I did not finish it yet! I really like the quilt, so I'm working at my own pace and will work on it when I have time. I'm making this quilt for myself, so I want it to be me. I cut most of the squares for the quilt-top and I wanted to share some pictures:

I'm still playing around with the arrangement, but I
like an asymmetrical one. I'll probably get some more
of my background fabric to make my quilt-top a little
bigger. Photo by Shelby.

Here's a close-up of two stars. I am using a variety of
fabrics, including prints from "Nest" by Tula Pink, dark
grey linen, and an old t-shirt that I really liked. The
background is Robert Kaufman's Kona Bone.

Color Wheel Project: Blue January

In 2012, I'm exploring the color wheel by picking a color each month. January was blue.

I finally made it to the quilt shop last week and picked out two blue fat quarters:

It was hard picking something out. Maybe I should visit a few different stores and be willing to take more risks. I am drawn to patterns, but sometimes it's hard to find exactly what I want. But it's not always about one fabric. A quilt is a collection of several fabrics--one a fabric may be ordinary by itself, but if it's paired with the rights fabrics, they can all shine together.

February's color is blue-violet, so look for the blue-violet post later this month.
